Cake 79—Fort San Carlos/ Hilton at the Ballpark (171 cakes left)

IMG_2980Are you aware that the only Revolutionary War battle fought west of the Mississippi took place in St. Louis? I have to admit that I was completely clueless about the battle at Fort San Carlos. Information about the battle is relatively scant, but blogger Cameron has a nice write-up about the battle: http://www.distilledhistory.com/battlefortsancarlos/
The battle took place near the present-day corner of Walnut and 4th. Fort San Carlos was a Spanish stone tower named in honor of King Charles III. The battle involved the British, Spanish, and Native Americans, and the Spanish were the victors. Today, a plaque commemorating the battle is located at the Hilton by Busch Stadium on the corner of Walnut and Broadway.

Craig Downs painted the cake at the Hilton. It prominently displays the date of the battle (May 26, 1780). It also has stars and a few people; one is dressed in a military uniform. If you’re downtown by Busch Stadium, take a moment to think about the battle of Fort San Carlos.

Thanks so much for mentioning my blog post about the battle. I love what you are doing. I added a link to your blog on Distilled History. When you get around to the Campbell House cake, be sure to say hello and get a tour (I often volunteer there on Saturdays). Cheers!

You’re welcome and thank you! Your blog is fantastic. I first stumbled upon it when I was trying to find information about the Le Grange de Terre Memorial. I’m looking forward to visiting the cake at the Campbell House! 🙂
